The Charge Of The Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Half a league half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred: 'Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns' he said: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!' Was there a man dismay'd ? Not tho' the soldier knew Some one had blunder'd: Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do & die, Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them Volley'd & thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred.
Flash'd all their sabres bare, Flash'd as they turn'd in air Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army while All the world wonder'd: Plunged in the battery-smoke Right thro' the line they broke; Cossack & Russian Reel'd from the sabre-stroke, Shatter'd & sunder'd. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, While horse & hero fell, They that had fought so well Came thro' the jaws of Death, Back from the mouth of Hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made! All the world wonder'd. Honour the charge they made! Honour the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred! This poem was written to memorialize a suicidal charge by light cavalry over open terrain by British forces in the Battle of Balaclava (Ukraine) in the Crimean War (1854-1856). 247 men of the 637 in the charge were killed or wounded. Britain entered the war, which was fought by Russia against Turkey, Britain and France, because Russia sought to control the Dardanelles, and that threatened British sea routes.
Most of us know of this war today because of Florence Nightingale, who trained and led nurses aiding the wounded during the war in a manner innovative for those times. Or because it was cited in the movie The Blind Side, that is based on the true story of Michael Oher, left tackle of the Baltimore Ravens.
(I am so digressing here.) I don't know much about football, but I've heard that, most of the time, the left tackle is the player who receives the 2nd highest pay (after the quarterback). Basically, they're paid for defending the quarterback and protecting his blind side. Their high pay is all thanks to Lawrence Taylor who broke Joe Theismann's leg because he had the ball. Theismann never played another game of football after that incident (go watch the video on youtube or at the start of the movie) where he suffered from a compound fracture (ow). You can even see his leg and how gruesomely it was bent when Taylor broke it. But Taylor wasn't sued, because Theismann was insured (all American Football players are- it's a dangerous sport). I don't know how many legs Oher has broken, and I certainly don't want to know.
Anyway, it's a brilliant but sad poem. The bolded lines sound like what kids nowadays have to do- listen to their teachers or die. It's funny, really, in a sad way.

A place of extreme beauty, delight, or happiness.
When I say that this site is "Paradise in Print", I refer to it a paradise, a beautiful, delightful, happy place found in print. This site is, essentially, my "happy place". It's what I love doing, what brings me joy, even in my darkest hours. It was first created on
April 20, 2008, and somehow inspired me to build up my portfolio as an aspiring writer, having allowed me to discover my love for writing in the first place. These words comfort me, when I feel the emptiest.

I'm your average girl-next-realm and typical English Literature freak who has been roaming the Earth since

perfectionist. In fact, I'm more than just aware of it- I'm
proud of it. Music and writing are loved, just as bunnies and chocolate covered Pocky sticks.
